This is how Uniform’s global overrides work and how you can use them to access many features for specialized tasks and workflows.
In Uniform, you primarily edit your 3D scene using tools. For this explanation, we will focus on the Move Delta Deformer tool. The Move tool provides the base functionality for deforming objects with a falloff in any context. The tool deforms the shape with a falloff corresponding to the size of the brush radius.
In most cases, this is exactly what we want. However, certain tasks require additional functionality beyond the base feature to be performed properly. For example, if we want to adjust a retopology mesh, we not only want to deform it but also snap it to the high-poly sculpt.
This is where global overrides come into play. By loading tool modules into the global overrides list, you can customize tools with extra settings to add precisely the functionality you need for a specific task. Once you are done, you can remove these additional modules, and the original tool will revert to its default, base behavior.
Uniform comes with many preconfigured override presets for common tasks. You can load them directly from the gallery and start using them immediately. Many features in Uniform are achieved by combining a base tool with a global override. You can use the gallery search to find tools and overrides relevant to your task.
For example, the Retopology Override preset provides the Move tool with the functionality needed to snap to the high-poly sculpt while adjusting the retopology mesh. While this override is loaded, not only the Move tool but any other deformation tool will behave in this way.
Another example is the Simulation Override preset, which adds physics simulation capabilities to the Move tool. As usual, clearing the override list will return the tool to its normal behavior.
As a final example, the Pixel Snapping Override preset allows you to freely move UVs while snapping them to the pixel corners of low-poly textures. Notice that we are still using the same base Move tool, but we are covering a wide range of contexts and workflows thanks to global overrides.
You may also notice the numbers under the global override list. These are called “lanes.” Each lane acts as a separate override list, and only one lane can be activated at a time. This feature allows you to keep multiple overrides loaded and quickly switch between them without having to reload them manually from the gallery each time you want to use them.
Finally, for advanced users, you can manually create overrides by adding feature modules one by one, without relying on presets. This allows you to achieve exactly the behavior you want or to experiment with tool settings without modifying the original base tool.
